Aurelius Prudentius Clemens

Birth 348
Death 405

Poet, whose verse was very popular in monasteries of the Middle Ages. He made a glittering secular career for himself, serving as judge and twice as governor, occupying the highest positions in the emperor’s court, but packed it all in at the age of 56 and turned to strict asceticism shut off in a monastery (he had clearly done something very naughty). He praised Christian martyrs and described man’s inner battle between vice and virtue.
