Benedict XVI (Joseph Alois Ratzinger)

Benedict XVI (Joseph Alois Ratzinger)
Birth 1927

Pope from 2005 to 2013. He went down in history as the first German Pope of the millennium and also as the first pope in the last 700 years to step down. In terms of his theology though, he wasn’t anything new: he encouraged people to open themselves to ‘friendship with Jesus Christ’ and declared that Christianity (which is irrational monotheism by any definition) was a ‘religion of reason’. In 2010, the media accused him of covering for paedophilic priests and he was forced to excommunicate a few of them – but only 400 or so.
