Charles-Theodore-Henri De Coster

Charles-Theodore-Henri De Coster
Birth 1827
Death 1879

Belgian journalist and writer, author of the book The Legend of Thyl Ulenspiegel, which is full of acute observations and Rabelaisian humour. He was born into the family of a secretary to a papal nuncio (a top-level diplomatic mission of the Holy See). Whilst working in the royal archives, he discovered records of the trials of alleged witches and materials relating to religious fanaticism. It didn’t do much for his faith in God.
