Most people think of him firstly as the author of the scandalous novels Justine, Juliette and The 120 Days of Sodom and the father of the sadism of his name. Few people know him as an enlightened political revolutionary who denied the existence of God, renounced Christianity’s hypocritical moral standards and spoke out against outdated social convention. Fewer still see him as a pioneer of existentialism and psychoanalysis.
