Francis of Assisi

Francis of Assisi
Birth 1181
Death 1226

Founder of the Franciscan order. In imitation of Christ he had idealistic views about poverty (a third of the world’s population would probably beg to differ) and sent monks who had previously lived in total isolation out to the masses as missionaries. He made history as the first Christian ever to have received stigmata from above – bleeding wounds where Christ’s crucifixion wounds would have been. He got some miracles in too, raising the dead and healing the blind, the lepers and the lame.
