Giovanni Pico della Mirandola

Giovanni Pico della Mirandola
Birth 1463
Death 1494

Italian philosopher and humanist theologian who admired Averroes (ibn Rushd) and the Kabbalah and dreamed of reconciling Christian theology with ancient philosophy. He extolled, even deified, mankind, placing him at the centre of the world. These views caught the attention of the Inquisition and Pico came to a sorry end; his actual cause of death is unclear, but more likely than not he was poisoned.
