German philosopher and intellectual, historian and diplomat. He was a genius: he developed mathematics and ethics, created calculus and logic, came up with the binary number system, formulated the law of the conservation of energy and theorised about the unconscious. He was a deist and believed in a ‘philosophical’ God.
