German alchemist, astrologist and risk-taker. He criticised contemporaneous scientific methods (his major work is called The Uncertainty and Vanity of the Sciences and Arts), and fought against scholasticism, fundamentalism and belief in magic. The figure of Agrippa inspired Goethe’s Faust.
