Jacob of Serugh

Jacques de Saroug
Birth 451
Death 521

Bishop in the Syrian Orthodox Church and poet. His 763 sermons in verse earnt him the nickname ‘Flute of the Spirit’. This scale of religious endeavour didn’t come cheap; he had up to 70 secretaries to help him ‘squeeze out’ the necessary facts from the Holy Scripture and the lives of the saints. He devoted most of his sermons to condemning fornication and praising virginity and, of course, the Virgin Mary, without ever accepting the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception itself.
