Jacques Le Goff

Jacques Le Goff
Birth 1924
Death 2014

French medievalist. His father was a militant atheist and his mother was deeply religious, so he had no choice but to grow up an agnostic. He was drawn to the medieval period by the prevalence of religion back then, the positive work ethic and the perceptions of women, which he found alien. He denied historical objectivity and relied on the mindset and emotions of historical actors. He paid homage to the contribution that Islamic culture had made.
