Jean Meslier

Jean Meslier
Birth 1664
Death 1729

Catholic priest of a quiet parish for over 40 years. Upon his death, he was discovered to have written a book describing God as ‘a chimera’, denying the existence of the soul, calling organised religion ‘a castle in the air’, and claiming suffering had no higher purpose and that there was no such thing as divine morality. What a thing to have happened! In terms of religion, it outshadows even Voltaire!
