John of the Cross (Jean de la Croix)

John of the Cross (Jean de la Croix)
Birth 1542
Death 1592

mystic, ascetic, author and one of the best poets from the Spanish-speaking world. John’s theology was based on the principle that God is everything and man is nothing. You can only come to know God through faith (reason helps at the outset, but soon comes into conflict with the ‘darkness and trials’ of faith),1 hope (not for your own virtue, but for God’s mercy), constantly purging your soul and desiring God every minute of your life.
