John Toland

John Toland
Birth 1670
Death 1722

Irish materialist philosopher. He postulated that space and time are inextricably linked to matter and motion, but that the universe is infinite. This was revolutionary for his time. He wrote over 100 essays, the most famous of which, Christianity not Mysterious, argues that the world can be understood through human reason alone. He was the first European academic who dared write about the philosophy of Hypatia, whom Cyril of Alexandria sentenced to death.
