Ancient Greek politician, orator and philosopher who was first to write philosophy in Latin. He was doubtful about the effectiveness of religious ethics, questioning whether the fear of divine retribution gave a strong enough incentive. He discussed the problem of evil (theodicy); it was obvious that – for all the gods’ best intentions – good people perished and bad people ruled.
