Birth 185
Death 254

Theologian and extreme ascetic, whose particular renown among early Christian apologists has nothing at all to do with the rumours that he castrated himself. He invented the term ‘God-Man’, was the first to outline the basic principles of Christianity in a systematic and philosophical way and wrote a comprehensive, detailed and insightful analysis of the Holy Scriptures, finding a literal, moral and spiritual interpretation for all its postulations. Despite all this, he was never canonised; worse, he was declared a heretic for suggesting that God the Son came second to God the Father, that the soul pre-existed the body and that sins and daemons would be redeemed.
