Theologian and cardinal, who believed everyone should be poor and priests should be celibate. He despised secular education, arguing God’s enemy, the Devil, the first educated person (now there’s a thought!). Devine revelation solves all our existential problems and secures our redemption, so it’s a complete waste of time and energy to thirst after any other kind of knowledge. He saw philosophy as the ‘servant of theology’. The thing that really gets us is that in 1050 (that long ago!), he wrote a treatise accusing Catholic priests of sexually abusing minors and church superiors of trying to hide these heinous crimes. This still rings true; what a shame nobody listened back then !
