Saadia Gaon

Birth 882
Death 924

Egyptian rabbi, major Jewish philosopher and poet, precursor to Maimonides. He tried to integrate elements of Greek philosophy into Judaism, as the former was secondary to religion and should therefore confirm the scriptures and refute the arguments of non-believers. In this sense, he was a whole century ahead of Peter Damian and his famous maxim that philosophy should serve theology. He translated the Bible into Arabic.
