Saint Dominic

Saint Dominic
Birth 1170
Death 1221

Founder of the Dominican monastic order. Apologists wax lyrical about his goodness and compassion, but for some reason forget to mention the fact that he was the first Catholic inquisitor, who tortured Languedoc and earnt himself the title ‘Hammer of the Heretics’ (it’s worth mentioning that the best-known inquisitor of all time, Tomás de Torquemada, was also a Dominican, as were the authors of The Malleus Maleficarum, Heinrich Kramer and Jacob Sprenger). Mind you, there’s really nothing surprising about this nickname; being a just man, Dominic didn’t just torture other people – he also whipped himself with an iron chain when praying.
