Early Christian apologist and extreme ascetic, pupil of Saint Justine. He condemned Greek civilisation for the disgraceful absurdity and amorality of its philosophy, science, and art, and even its language. He believed that the Holy Spirit used to dwell in us all before He was chased out by savage animal-like daemons. Salvation from the daemons lies in the mortification of the flesh – wrenching the soul from anything material in order to prepare it for eternal life. This led him to preach abstinence from meat, wine, sex and marriage.
