Birth 1694
Death 1778

Philosopher, author and playwright, the pride of France. A deist who believed that God was the faceless reason behind everything material. He thought of faith as a useful societal tool (‘If there wasn’t a God, we’d have to make one up’), but he had no time for the postulates of Christian faith and morality. He made his feelings about the official church quite clear: ‘crush the infamous thing!’.
